There are people who are born with the amazing gift of drawing. Some, they say, have learned to draw first, before learning to write their name. Lex Persephone E. Nuqui is one of the promising young artists who, at the tender age of 11, has been joining group shows being part of the roster of artists from the prestigious international contemporary gallery based in Metro Manila, Luna Galleria.

However, this is not surprising for her dad, Rex Nephi Nuqui is a visual artist, too and is the brain behind the Tabaco Open Gallery, based in Tabaco City, Albay in the Bicol Region. According to her mom, Donna E. Nuqui, who works in one of the leading agencies in the Philippine Government, the Department of Information and Communications Technology, Lex draws inspiration from her family in creating her beautiful art pieces.

Because her dad is in the US, it was Donna who encouraged the young Lex to pursue her dreams of becoming an artist. In fact, she even joined her daughter in her art classes, particularly in Luna Galleria, not only to give moral support but also to push her to explore more when it comes to art. Donna also joined, alongside her daughter, several art exhibits organized by the gallery just to accompany Lex.

When it comes to her works, Lex often uses deep and light colors to capture the mood and essence of the subjects that she’s painting. While her style is still in the works, one can clearly see the potential of Lex of becoming an expressionist and a realist—or even a mannerist—someday. If we are to examine her works closely, this 11-year-old artist has a penchant for highlighting what she sees as the good quality of her subject, blurring the lines between post-expressionist tendencies to realistic drawings or paintings. Perhaps, it is safe to say that Lex might go into the direction of being a spontaneous realist, or a combination of the aforementioned artistic styles. Of course, it is still early to say this; but it seems that this is the tendency.

Since Lex is still an artist-in-development, we hope that she keeps that artistic fire burning and she will continue to pursue a career in the arts. Even if not, we hope that she’ll continue to paint not only to express her thoughts, emotions, and dreams but also to inspire the world.

On the other hand, it is noteworthy to quote what this talented young artist has to say (which echoes what the late Master Pablo Picasso said, decades ago):

“I hope to inspire children like my age to engage in visual arts. I encourage everyone that we have innate talents and skills that we can be proud of.”

May the Muses continue to bless Lex and her art; and we can’t wait to see what she will be painting next.

Sibol is a special section of the Orient Pearl Global Magazine, dedicated to aspiring young/new visual artists and from other creative fields. Its primary aim is to introduce these young/up-and-coming creative minds to a wider audience, and hopefully, gather more support for their artistic endeavors.
